&quotBan these evil games&quot, &quotVideogame violence corrupting our nation’s youth&quot, &quotvideo video games stole my husband&quot. It seems everyday that the media are making much more and much more claims about the evils of videogames. But are these claims based on reality, or is it simply that there is a juicy new scapegoat out there that the woes of the world can be pinned on?

Many individuals will be conscious of the Every day Mail’s ‘Manhunt’ tale by now. The paper ran with the first web page headline of ‘Ban these evil games’, claiming that 17 year old Warren LeBlanc’s obsession with the ultra-violent Rockstar game ‘Manhunt’ drove him to beat his 14 year old buddy, Stefan Pakeerah, over fifty occasions with both a claw hammer and knife. The tabloid then proceeded to assert &quotthe hammer-and-knife killing mirrored scenes in the ultra-violent game&quot. The paper also ran a quote from the mom of the victim, stating that, regardless of the reality the game had an 18 certificate, &quotit’s no good stating this game is marketed at grown ups. Everybody understands that youthful children get their hands on them.&quot

But what was the real motive behind the murder, and the follow up tale? It is simple to see exactly where the motive for the Every day Mail’s tale came from. In the words of the panel of the IGDA (International Video games Developers Association) &quotit was a sluggish news day&quot. And what much better to liven it up than blood, violence and a convenient scapegoat?

There are two other essential details to remember about this terrible murder. Firstly, what do the police say? Following the headline in the Every day Mail you may believe that they came to the conclusion that it was the game that set Warren off on his murderous way. However the conclusion that the police arrived at is that the motive was robbery. It turns out that Warren Leblanc had, in real reality, a £75 medicines fuelled financial debt to a local gang when he lured his erstwhile buddy into the park that night, and initially intended simply to rob him. The police report tends to make no point out of ‘Manhunt’ whatsoever. This may be because the game was discovered in Stefan’s room, rather than that of the killer. Each of these pertinent details were absent from the Mail’s front web page the day this tale ran.

And one should inquire, how was it that Mrs. Pakeerah missed the reality her personal 14 year old son owned this ultra-violent game, which he could only have acquired if an grownup had purchased it for him.

&quotBut is the game any good?&quot I listen to you cry. Quite merely, no. ‘Manhunt’ is one of these video games that are the key stumbling blocks in the path of really grownup video games. Computer video games are now reaching the stage exactly where mature themes, meaning comprehensive, involving stories that can offer with occasions in the real world, and portray reasonable reactions to them, are becoming feasible. However some developers insist on pouring out video games that are aimed only at fuelling the testosterone driven adolescent fantasies of teenage sadists. When you think about tack like ‘Manhunt’ in the light of video games like ‘Half-Existence 2′, with its persuasive narrative interwoven via beautiful, breathtaking surroundings, you realise just how tawdry ‘Manhunt’ truly is.

The consensus at the IGDA meeting this year was that the game was simply &quota rubbish game with a layer of crunchy ultra-violence slapped on top&quot. No doubt the loss of such a youthful child as Stefan Pakeerah was a tragedy in its personal right, but the true tragedy here is twofold. Almost overnight the game, whose product sales had been a mere trickle prior to, started flying off the shelves of these couple of retailers who hadn’t banned it, the idea of censorship lending the game a certain cachet. Even even worse, in the words of Rob Fahey of the IGDA, is the way in which &quotthe video games business ‘close ranks’ to defend it [Manhunt] when its an aberration compared to most video games – do you see Stephen Spielberg defending hardcore porn movies?&quot

There are many nicely-documented stories of the media blaming video video games for the world’s woes. They blame the twin-towers terrorist attack on Microsoft, who trained the pilots with their flight simulator software program. They blame Doom for the shootings at Columbine Higher College, because the game exactly where you openly flaunt weapons aided the boys secretively strategy their murderous rampage. There is often claimed to be a direct link in between the American sniper incident and videogames, because the target shooting abilities of the sniper were developed from videogames, and nothing to do with the comprehensive rifle coaching he obtained from the US army. The simple reality is that it requires much more than just video games to transform normal individuals into murderers.

In accordance to the tabloids we ought to presently be inundated by hordes of slavering, violence obsessed gamers. However as this plague has yet to create maybe we ought to take what they are stating with a pinch of salt. When a game player unglues him (or her) self from the computer keep track of and doesn’t find a machine gun lying at their feet, the suspension of disbelief is damaged. It requires planning and coaching to have out functions like these. Saying that violent video games flip individuals into killers is the exact same as stating that individuals exposed to Islam will become terrorists. There is no much more violence in most video games than there is in movies, or horror books. In reality even the U.S court of appeal wrote, &quot(the idea that) there is a strong likelihood that minors who play violent videogames will endure a deleterious impact on their psychological health is merely not supported in record.&quot In other words, videogames are not the cause of violence.

What this truly arrives down to is the parents, and the worldview that they impart onto their children. If the parents don’t take the time to talk to their children explain to them right and wrong, then how will the child know what he or she ought to do? How many parents explain to their child that the game is not real that in real existence you can’t do everything you can in the game? Whilst violence sells it does not teach, and sadly in this day and age ‘upbringing by Playstation’ is becoming a much more and much more typical phenomenon as parents’ time constraints get the much better of them.

All video games have a rigid rating system in place, called ESBN. This system is designed to stop video games from falling into the hands of minors, and yet often when a child is refused a game by the management the parent, even after the rating system has been explained to them, buys the game anyway. Mother and father need to be educated much more about what they are buying, instead of buying what ever game the children inquire for maybe they need to think about what they want their children to be viewing. Would you let a child of 12-14, or even younger, view hardcore porn or an 18 rated film? Then maybe you should not let them play an 18 rated game. The stereotype that video games are just for children is badly out of date, and maybe it’s time parents started to take much more duty for what their children play on.

In each and every group there are a couple of who don’t fit in with the social norm. Is it true that these individuals can be influenced by violent videogames? No doubt. But is this the root cause of their affliction? No. Books, movies, tough and tumble play all of these blend actuality and fiction. What individuals need to accept is that they should take duty for their personal actions, and that maybe societies ills are rooted in larger issues than a small animated character shooting an additional small animated character.

Daniel Robson runs http://www.shock-therapy.org exactly where he provides his personal freeware, as nicely internet hosting freeware for Symbian UIQ seven. phones, particularly the Sony Ericsson PX00 sequence.

As graphics technology improves in leaps and bounds for the next pc generation, more and more gamers expect, and more or less demand, new and innovating concepts to blow their mind. However, there are some games out there that simply stand the test of time for pure entertainment.

One of these games is Quake III Arena from ID Software.

This game still remains, after half a decade, as one of those games that never seems to fade in appeal when it comes to going one-on-one against a fellow gamer over the age of fourteen. (The graphic nature of the game is not suitable for children.)

Whereas there is the impending release of Quake 4, which will go more towards a storyline, Quake III Arena remains simple: Deathmatch – Hunt down and kill your opponent. This is your only task.

The game is a First-Person Shooter that takes place in a futuristic world, with gameplay featured on a couple dozen core maps. Your weapons, ranging from real to fantasy, deal out devastating damage. Powerups throughout these maps give you more speed, damage, etc; and each map is usually multi-levelled and reachable by various bounce pads, stairs, and elevators. You just have to watch around the corners, as you never know who’s going to be camping there waiting to blow you away.

Now, whether your opponent be your best friend, your neighbor, your kid, or your wife; the joy of chasing them down and eliminating their ability to exist as a whole entity will continue to bring a smile to your face over and over again; and if no-one wants to play against you anymore because you’re too much of a savage, you can always play against bots.

The engine this game runs on is good enough to enable a relatively intense dispersal of body parts from the shot gun blast you administor to your victim, and yes, produces blood splatter on walls and screams of agony. A midrange system can handle all that the game offers.

The extra staying power of the game revolves around the creation of new maps and bot models by gamers themselves; which can be found for download at places like LvLWorld and Polycount. Thousands of maps and hundreds of bots can bring a whole new dimension to the game, and the creations continue to this day. Take on Homer Simpson, Darth Vader, or the creature from Aliens in maps ranging from being inside a computer tower , where you are about two inches tall; to rampaging through a city, where you can leap from the top of each building in a single bouncepad … all the while trying to evade a plasma gun, rocket launcher, or flamethrower.

Austin Culley is an avid gamer whose wife continues her efforts to take his Quake 3 Arena Title away from him at least once a week. He can be reached at http://www.oil-net.com

In the last six months, the demise of sims has been pronounced in abundance. Print mags and sim webzines have been telling you sims are being cancelled left and right Jane’s A-10: Cancelled. Wolfpack II: Cancelled. Silent Steel II: MIA. M1Tank Platoon 3: Cancelled. Fighting Steel Deluxe: Cancelled. Jane’s Attack Squadron: MIA. Thunder Over Europe: MIA. The list goes on.

We all know that this is a down cycle for sims and we believe there is hope that in a couple of years, things will turn around and sims will be hot stuff again. Hey, I remember in 1973 when the EPA and OPEC throttled the life out of the muscle car scene. I had a 1970 Cobra Torino that had 450 hp and ran the quarter in the high 13s. In less than three years every car out of Detroit was a smog controlled, gas economizing slug. They even started making them as ugly as they were slow! It was heartbreaking.

But over time, things change. Now you can get a high performance machine that handles and has luxuries like front/rear AC. My ’99 Riviera has a supercharged V-6 that would make my old Torino proud.

So, keep the faith. Things will improve, even if no one knows when. Silent Hunter II and Destroyer Command are showing signs of life. Harpoon 4 is still under development. There are stirrings from the Sonalysts camp.

When a new subsim does hit the shore, try to remember, the developers and game producers are our friends. They make the kind of games we like because they like them too. Why would they labor over armor thickness tables, ship model physics, and torpedo trajectories for a niche market? I know a few developers and they all love the genre.

Try to keep your criticism balanced. Should you blast a sim you had trouble with or didn’t enjoy with all the invective and animosity you would normally reserve for someone who stole your car or used your toothbrush? I was told by one producer that high-level executives frequently ask him about hard-core negative postings on newsgroups and forums. The industry sees us as demanding, unappreciative, and impossible to satisfy. It’s much easier and more lucrative to crank out Deer Hunter and Barbie games and their users rarely flame the game company to a crisp.

I work with a CPA accountant who likes computer games and is pretty good at them. He can play a mean Age of Empires warrior. I tried to interest him in learning Jane’s 688(I) for some multiplay. He took one look at the hefty manual and waved it off. He assumed he would need to learn all the material to play competitive. The blessing and the curse of a good sim is its complexity. You want to command a battle fleet or do TMA on a Los Angeles class submarine? You need to learn skills and study. And this restricts the popularity of the sim. Mass market games generally do not carry the steep learning curve a sim does. So while we hard core sim players are delighting in the minutia of seven different stations and all their controls, casual gamers are passing up the sim at a 20 to 1 ratio. Sims truly are a niche market.

Niche market games have limited budgets. This mean a small number of programmers and artists must concentrate on the basics. Don’t expect to see everything you want and imagine in a sim. Oh yeah, I’m with you–I wish a subsim could have full motion crews and other fun stuff. But as one producer told me, “We don’t have the money to design and integrate these features into the product. I wish we could, too.”

We should be finding out the status of Silent Hunter II soon. Either Mattel Interactive is going to sign someone to complete it or it will be canned. I went through the “we are planning to do this” stage with the fabled Jane’s Ice Pack add-on for 688(I), Crusader Studios’ Akula: Red Hunter, Silent Steel 2, and the interoperability between Jane’s Fleet Command and 688(I). I’m not passing judgment here, just stating that when the momentum dies, so does the objective. For whatever reasons, the product champions behind those sims were unable to secure the financing to start work. To get a better feel for the whole process, read my friend John Sponauer’s analysis of the life and death of a sim, M1 Tank Platoon 2, from its early development as an upgrade all the way through its last couple of weeks.

Despite my previous experiences with other sim companies, I am optimistic that Carl Norman and Rick Martinez mean what they say and SSI will continue to raise the banner of the Digital Combat Series while the Jane’s, NovaLogics, and Microproses around them fall like unfortunate tin soldiers. This is not to say SH2 is a done deal–that moment will come when you hold the box in your hand. We look to the next rumored subsim as our best hope for advanced underwater warfare. All we can do is stay positive, supportive, and if it’s decent, buy four copies when it comes out.

What ever happened to that game console we used to call the Sega Dreamcast? Why did it suddenly disappear after 2 years of production? Was the government involved in brainwashing our minds like in George Orwell’s 1984? All these questions will be answered as I investigate the Dreamcast’s devastating decline.

Introduction

In the beginning it was good. Sega released a solid piece of hardware called the Dreamcast that was easy to develop games for and kicked the competition’s rear ends in terms of graphics and sound. It entered the market with a strong start, selling quite well upon its release. Although the Dreamcast lacked 3rd party support, Sega’s games were aplenty and the very best in quality. Sega seemed to be heading in the right direction, but two years later the company abruptly discontinued the Dreamcast.

There were 3 main causes to the downfall of the Dreamcast.

1. Piracy Issues

The Dreamcast had a serious hardware flaw which gave it the ability to play copied games and downloaded ones from the internet. Many people chose to play the pirated versions of the games rather than shell out $40-$50 at a local gaming store for the real thing. As a result, Sega was losing money on the games that its developers had spent hours designing. I call that a sad waste of talent.

2. Loss of Faith in Sega Brand

Before the Dreamcast, there was the Sega Saturn, an absolute failure. At that time, Sega was releasing new add-ons and consoles so often that nobody wanted to buy the Saturn because they feared Sega would introduce a new console and cut off game development with the current one. They were right. Sega soon released the Dreamcast and rather than gain customers, it gained a bad reputation. The media attacked Sega and denounced the Dreamcast with suspicions and doubts. The trust that Sega had once set up was now broken and people lost faith in Sega’s ability to produce game systems.

3. Overhype of the PS2

The #1 selling game console in 1999 was the Sony PSOne, so naturally people were hyped up about PS2. I definitely was. PS2 was the buzz in the gaming industry. It was said to have more superior graphics, sound, and games than any of the consoles at the time. Meanwhile, the Dreamcast was already out in stores and shared similar hardware specs as the PS2, which would not be released until one year later. People overlooked the Dreamcast because they were all so overhyped about PS2 when really the two had many similarities.

In the past I’ve never truly paid much attention to safety issues when it arrives to consumer names and passwords. Frankly I figured it was all a lot of overblown buzz. This led to an unfortunate incident that involved my web site being attacked, apparently by a skillful youth with a propensity for mischief.

The primary safety flaw with my web site was most likely the simple reality that the username and password were exactly the exact same. Granted I did realize that this was not highly intelligent but I didn’t have the energy to change it myself, and I didn’t think it truly mattered sufficient to bother about it. Having an identical username and password is a massive “no-no” in pc safety. Your username and password should not even be associated along the exact same line of believed. A username of “Dragon” and a password of “Fire” is not a secure combination.

For maximum safety, passwords should not be cohesive words or phrases and should not be as well obviously associated to some thing like your birthday or the birthday of someone close to you. Personal info is one of the first things utilized when individuals try to break passwords. Having a password of “Password” is certainly humorous and ironic but it is not in the least bit secure.

A “brute force” password hacking technique entails using certain guidelines and to take a guess at possible passwords and usually works via a dictionary of kinds, attempting combinations of possible words and typical characters. Your best bet at making a secure password is to choose a random collection of letters, figures, and symbols, such as varying case modifications (in a password the letter “a” is not the exact same as the letter “A”, so alternating at random in between upper and decrease case will increase the difficulty encountered in cracking your password). Choosing a sequence of characters on the keyboard (this kind of as “asdf” or, worse, “1234″) certainly does not create a secure, random password.

Having symbols in your password is an easy way to greatly increase safety. These are the special characters accessed by holding the “Shift” crucial and pressing one of the figures at the leading of the keyboard. If you want to really expand your arsenal of special characters, try holding down the “alt” crucial and pressing a combination of figures on the num pad (the rectangular collection of figures on the correct hand aspect of most keyboards) then launch “alt”. For example, holding “alt” and pressing figures, 1 then 6 then 8 and releasing “alt” will give the character “¿”. Most combinations of three figures will enter a various symbol into your password. This may make it a little harder to enter your password but it makes it a lot harder for anybody else to crack it.

To make passwords easier to keep in mind you can use some thing original, like the name of your favorite character in a book (personal info that other individuals won’t know). Then add some figures to it, perhaps use the “Leet communicate” (examine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet for precise definition) method of changing letters to figures and usually mix things up so that to you it seems coherent and memorable but to an automated pattern recognizer it seems random. For example, “jAm35_5m1Th¿” (“James Smith”) is really surprisingly secure. In this case the password’s meaning is obvious to a human reader but it will take a lot of function for them to divine the password with out prior information (unless you’ve utilized your name or a close relative/friend’s name which, as we’ve currently discussed, is not a good concept).

For additional safety you should not use the one consumer name and password for each and every account that you have. If you do and someone manages to get maintain of your details for one website they pretty much have the run of your digital existence. It is not particularly important to have ideal passwords for much less important accounts (e.g. internet based email from Hotmail, discussion boards you go to etc.). These websites can really happily be accessed using the exact same password. Nevertheless, bank accounts, function email etc. should be made as secure as possible.

Hopefully a few of these ideas will help you in making your on-line actions much more secure. Keep these in mind, change your password on a semi regular foundation, and with any luck you’ll be able to avoid the hacking menace that befell me.

Much much more than the previous yr or so a fantastic offer of buzz, mystery and controversy has been elevated more than the new Nintendo Console. Techniques like the Xbox have used the lead in gaming with supplying abilities these kinds of as on-line multiplayer. When Nintendo showed off their new method at the E3 Expo they showed gamers that they truly intend to revolutionize the video clip clip clip game neighborhood as rapidly as as soon as a great deal much more. But till Nintendo &ampampampampquotofficially&ampampampampquot provides us the details, we can only speculate and wait.

The Buzz and the Mystery

No 1 truly understands as properly a fantastic offer about the Nintendo Revolution . What will it appear like? What type of power will it &ampampampampquotactually&ampampampampquot have? What video clip clip clip video clip clip video clip games are in enhancement? Nintendo is, for the most component, retaining a lid on issues. We do not even truly know when the official begin day will be. It has been talked about that March of 2006 will be the &ampampampampquotunofficial&ampampampampquot day.

Residing in an on-line planet, it seems everyone has &ampampampampquotthe inside scoop&ampampampampquot on the new console. Members of weblogs and discussion boards are stating every and element from holographic imaging to new techniques of image processing precisely where a developer could produce hyper inexpensive vistas at a fraction of the existing processing cost. The bottom line is, with limited details, speculation is rampid, which creates a fantastic offer of misinformation and buzz..

What we do know?or think we know?

Conclusion

As it stands correct now, the new Nintendo console will most most most most likely be obtainable early to mid 2006, along with the begin of the new PS3 and the Xbox 360. What can we anticipate? I think it would be naive to think that Nintendo is heading to begin a method that will be inferior to the rivals. They have been about as properly lengthy to make an additional big error. The new Nintendo gaming method will enter the market as a greater or equal to the rivals, enhancing the subsequent era gaming method. Nintendo Revolution hopes to reside up to its title when it hits retailers in 2006.

The Gizmondo mixed media player, telephone and gaming gadget went on sale in the final month for £229. The device sports an extraordinary spec: – It can be used to play games, audio tracks and movies, it can take and store digital photos and can send SMS, MMS and emails, GPS, GPRS and Bluetooth for multi-player gaming.

From April 22nd you’ll be in a position to buy a Gizmondo for £100 less – a awesome 44% conserving. In return, for this discount, Gizmondo customers will have to watch 3 &quotSmart Adds&quot per day.

The Intelligent Adds will mainly consist of video clips and little games that come with redemption codes or barcodes that are wirelessly delivered to your Gizmondo over its GPRS connection.

I’m not so certain that this option is cheaper….Ok, 44% less but who pays the data cost for downloading the ad? Even if each ad is only 100Kb (I’m guessing they will be more but I’m being generous) then on my network (Vodafone) at £2.35/Mb these ads would cost me £257!!!

Other reasons why I think the Gizmondo is destined for failure are:

- It expenses £229. Nintendo’s DS handheld expenses £99, and a PSP is anticipated to cost £129 – far less than the cost of a Gizmondo

- The DS currently has a pool of enthusiasts of earlier Nintendo handhelds to draw on (87,000 DS handhelds were offered in the first two days in Europe) and the PSP is also most likely to have a powerful subsequent

- Most importantly, it doesn’t have a killer game for launch

I’d love to be in a position to ‘Buy British’ but I think the Gizmondo will go the way of the C5, Sedgeway etc. Might be worth purchasing one as I bet it will be worth a bit in ten many years!

Maybe in a year I’ll be proven wrong.
