one) Red Oak is not the only option

If you want your house to seem like everybody else’s, this is a great option. If you want your house to be distinctive try hickory, cherry, walnut, white oak, maple or several others. Go to flooring stores or lookup the Internet and see what is available. If you really want red oak try utilizing wider widths or character grade for choice and uniqueness.

two) two one/4 inch is not the only dimension available

If all you ask your builder for is a hardwood floor ? you are heading to get a two one/4 inch red oak floor. Why? It is the most common, most created, most stocked, least expensive option available. You can buy measurements in 3&ampampquot via 12&ampampquot. You can place down a single width for a uniform seem or several widths for a a lot more random seem. Typical random flooring styles are 3&ampampquot-4&ampampquot-5&ampampquot, 3&ampampquot-5&ampampquot, 4&ampampquot-5&ampampquot-6&ampampquot. Have enjoyable! Make your house distinctive! The wider the floor the a lot more seasonal separations in in in between the flooring planks can happen.

three) Import Species do not assist function in the United States

Whilst there are huge quantities of imported species available, there are great, fascinating species of flooring available right here in the United States. Not all nations have managed forests and renewable sources. This is an important time to assist our individual economy.

4) All flooring is not choose (obvious) grade

The most common floors are choose grade. These floors consist of none of woods usually occurring character marks. Look about your flooring showroom, almost every and display is ing obvious flooring. There are warm and inviting options. Look at a character grade or other grades. Make specific to see a picture of what the floor seems like, not just one piece.

5) Prefinished flooring is handy

Have you ever before been pressured to leave your house for three days while the flooring contractor sands, stains and recoats your floor? If not ask a buddy who has had it carried out. A professional flooring contractor will leave your house spotless, others can leave dust on all your furnishings. Contemporary factory completed flooring can be installed these days and entertained on tonight with extremely small mess. With prefinished flooring plank is allowed to transfer independently with humidity modifications in your house. This makes those seasonal separations (cracks) in your floor a great deal less obvious.

six) Colours can be amazing ? but mother nature is difficult to defeat

Some species of flooring are so spectacular in their organic colour, they do not need any additional colour. Look up hickory, cherry or walnut flooring on the Internet and you will see what I recommend.

seven) Prefinish warranties are a gimmick

fifty yr guarantee ? WOW! Lifetime guarantee ? great! Oh really? These are wear-via warranties only. Your floor will loose its &ampampquotsheen&ampampquot or luster and need refinishing lengthy prior to you ever before wear via the complete. The best way to make a floor last is to vacuum it frequently to maintain absent abrasive supplies that might scratch your floor. Preserve in thoughts a decrease sheen floor exhibits a great deal less wear.

Not all flooring is sleek ? texture is nicely-liked

Hardwood flooring does not have to be sleek. Numerous companies are providing hand scraped, distressed and reclaimed flooring. These floors have a traditional seem and consist of great value to upscale houses. They do not show a great deal wear or scratches because they have a great offer of character curiosity to draw interest to numerous elements of the floor. These floors will be a assured conversation piece with your pals and neighbors and are frequently the focal point at luxurious house tours.

9) In a basement use engineered flooring

Most individuals use engineered flooring to glue down to concrete or in greater moisture locations. This flooring has a skinny layer of hardwood with a cross banded plywood base. This makes the flooring a lot more steady and does not need nailing like a potent hardwood floor.

10) Laminate flooring is not Hardwood flooring

A great steak does not flavor the exact same as a picture of a great steak. If you want the beauty and warmth of hardwood flooring in your house ? buy the actual factor, not a inexpensive imitation.

These days, discovering guidance or guides to inside design is a quick and simple task. Are you looking to design that ‘dream room’, the one that you have stored vision of for up teen years and by no indicates acted on? Perhaps you are a expert who is interested in livening up their occupation situation by delving into the globe of inventive design. Or maybe, a certain recent event in your existence this type of as a marriage or even the arrival of a new child has led you to undertake this mission. Whatever the cause, if you are new to the inside design scene, it is suggested that you dip your toe into the water prior to you lunge in. By this, I mean that the truly idea that you are studying this write-up and in lookup of guides to inside design is a fantastic sign!

To get issues off on the correct track, you will want to further your mission by looking for out and discovering, studying, listening to, as numerous guides to inside design a feasible. You will likely find this kind of information in style magazines, catalogs, publications, guidance from distinguished designers, even house and garden television exhibits! The reality is, guidance on this subject is pretty simple to find. Maintain in ideas, nevertheless, that just because guides to inside design are simple to find does not make the guidance found sensible or even sound. The best way to weather the wealth of information available and to acquire the most useful understanding in query is to collect the information from a wide selection of resources and weigh it all with/against each other.

Not truly certain what I mean? For instance, you may find content material content articles in magazines especially centered toward guides to inside design and design challenges introduced by different spaces. If you are feeling especially established, buy magazines that are based exclusively on inside design issues and markets. If you find content material content articles that you think about to be especially useful, reduce them out and gather them in a folder or paste them into a book that is devoted exclusively to content material related to guides to inside design. This may seem somewhat overzealous but in the lengthy operate, the much more educated on the subject you are, the much more likely you are to excel in your undertaking of it. A phrase of guidance: if you are taking your information primarily from magazines, be certain not to use out of date issues for your main content material. An write-up or two is okay and even useful in guiding you in the direction of lengthy time established or conventional design perspectives. Nevertheless, keep in ideas that inside design is based on the most recent and most popular developments in our society and numerous events non-conventional developments have a tendency to fade absent within five years or so.

There are benefits of television guides to inside design and there are drawbacks as nicely. The benefits are, of program, that the information provided is likely to be based on recent, popular design developments and most of them are pretty simple to incorporate into any setting. Several guides to inside design based on information proven on television also provide how-guidance and at events even troubleshooting information just in situation you hit a tough spot in your software program. Beware of the exhibits that dedicate their designs to function that showcases specific goods or collections. These kinds of designs are frequently expensive in nature and if you improvise it is truly feasible to create the precise same kind of influence based on a similar idea-using less costly materials.

If all else fails, you can usually fall back again onto your inventive vision. Reduce clippings from magazines and ads that present a specific design or feeling that you would like to recreate. As soon as you have established a pretty large collection, go through the clippings and produce down the similarities in the designs that help incorporate the specific appear you want. By doing this, you can mix the information you have collected and create your personal individual space-created especially for you

The House Inspector

When you think about it, it is a bit odd. A individual hires a stranger to snoop around another stranger’s home for a few hrs and report back again. It is seems instead like someone hiring a burglar to situation a home for a robbery. The primary distinction is that the owner of the home is a prepared participant, as nicely, and that every thing is really quite legal and more than board. The motive of the purchaser is, of course, to make certain that he or she doesn’t get ‘robbed’ with a damaged-down furnace that the seller say is great, for instance. This occurred to me in the days prior to home inspection was a typical component of the real estate transaction. Although the support has been around because the 1970s, it has only really flip out to be an integral component of home-purchasing because the mid to late 1990s.

My wife and I ended up with a furnace that was quickly condemned by a technician and a great big bill for a new 1. It was mid-November and we could not exactly get along with out 1. What did we know about furnaces? We did not know how lengthy 1 lasted or how to inform if it was in great type or not. That was a dozen years back again. We know a lot a much better now about furnaces ? absolutely nothing like acquiring burned to make you a more wary subsequent time.

House inspectors are, like me, normal individuals who are interested in houses, their building, their methods, and fairly a lot some thing else about them. They are generally generalists with comprehending of 1000′s of bits of information about fairly a lot some thing and every thing in the home. Some, have additional specialties in several trades, or will offer additional services at additional costs for issues such as Radon inspections. Many, like me, are educated and licensed by way of schools or corporations such as Carson-Dunlop Consulting Engineers in Toronto.

We are also interested in the individuals who reside there and the individuals who are looking to transfer in. Like you, we have spouses, children, mother and father, pets, and other family members with whom we share our living spaces. What we all have in typical is that we all want a great, obvious, secure location to reside with ? hopefully ? no unpleasant surprises. We want to help you realize what you have prior to you buy or sell, so you can make knowledgeable choices.

No home is perfect. That’s not to say some thing is incorrect with it, but think of a home as an natural entity. It sits on a foundation. It stands on its framework. It breathes and has circulatory methods. It requirements to maintain at a comfy and even temperature. And, most of all, it requirements to be taken treatment of. Like your own physique, or even your automobile, if you do not consider treatment of it, it will start to age prematurely and drop apart.

But what are home inspectors and why do you require 1?

Believe of a home inspector looking more than your home like the mechanic you have to appear at your automobile. Homes require to be taken treatment of and looked following. Nevertheless, like cars, sometimes we do not consider as a lot treatment of them as we should. Some issues are not fixed, whilst other issues are by no means even noticed or checked more than the years and drop into disrepair. House inspectors act as the detached third-party that advises on the scenario and standing of the home with out the emotional investment. Great home inspectors give the directly particulars, will stage out issues to view or repair, and will stage out the positives of your home as nicely.

Just as the name suggests, home inspectors look at homes, but they also generally look at garages, patios, decks, driveways, and the lay of the land. Some will look at other structures such as sheds, barns, gazebos, pools and pool houses, but these are past the standards for most inspectors. Many will adhere to the standards and practices of the Canadian Association of House and Inspectors (CAHPI or CAHI) or the American Society of House Inspectors (ASHI) ? whether or not or not or not they are real members in the association.

House inspection is the quickest-expanding trade within the real estate industry in North The united states with about two-thirds to 3-quarters of all homes undergoing an inspection. House inspectors have flip out to be an integral component of the home transaction process. While most home inspectors are called in as quickly as a purchaser is ready to buy a home, some are called in by sellers prior to they want to sell, or by homeowners who are looking at primary renovations or upgrades to their home.

What do they do?

In any scenario, the inspection process is basically the precise exact same. After initial introductions and a discussion of what is to be done, where to go, where not to go (the baby’s area), and other standards, the inspector will get down to the ‘dirty’ function. The inspector will give the home and a thorough heading- more than ? generally beginning outdoors, then relocating indoors from area to area producing observations and notes on a checklist. It is typical for inspectors to go into rooms two or 3 occasions looking at numerous issues each and every time. Others will visit specific rooms only as quickly as, doing all the checks they require then and there. Each inspector is numerous and capabilities in a different way.

Safety is the more than-riding problem of the home inspector ? every for the inspector and the consumer. Some home inspectors will open up electrical panels to appear at wiring, others will not, but all should look at the panel(s), the wiring, distribution system, grounding, load, and other noticeable bits and items.

Most inspectors will appear within furnaces and other heating gadgets if the panels arrive off easily. Others will use resources to get rid of panels, but numerous will draw the line there. Many inspectors will walk on the roof when conditions permit to look at the roof, the supplies and workmanship, and issues such as vents, chimney(s), and gutters. Some roofs are extremely steep, in bad type, or are constructed with fragile tiles. Most inspectors will not walk on the roof in these scenarios, but will both appear from the edge by way of a ladder, appear from an adjacent structure, or use binoculars whilst on the floor.

Plumbing is another primary system that home inspectors will spend a great offer of time examining. They’ll appear at what the pipes are made of, whether or not or not it is electrically grounded or not, how the h2o appears, flows, and even smells, how scorching the h2o will get, as nicely as operate every and each and every tap and toilet to make certain that they are all working nicely and not leaking. House inspectors will also be looking for other leaks ? previous and present, proof of h2o damage, and they will appear at drainage methods and sump pumps.

The structure is another essential stage of the inspection. Inspectors will appear at how the home is maintaining itself up ? really, and how it is, or has been settling in and weathering via the years. Inspectors will appear for wall and floor cracks because of to settling and try to figure out the age and severity of the crack. House inspectors will also look at the brickwork, windows, doorways, joists, rafters, pad, and other components for warping, fire or h2o damage, bad building, tampering or harmful remodelling, and other inform-tale indicators of how the home is build and taken treatment of.

House inspectors will often crawl around in crawlspaces, peer into or enter attics, appear in closets and chimneys, around windows and doorways, beneath carpets, and every and each and every other location in the home where they see or suspect proof of some thing might be amiss ? or might be especially great.

Common items not looked at are a more cosmetic in nature. Paint is not a primary problem unless it provides proof to other issues like mildew, weathering, and so on. Carpeting is not generally commented on unless is moldy or on leading of electrical wiring. Landscaping will be looked at with regards to impact on the home. Trees and shrubs are often planted as nicely close to a home or develop up against them more than time and might trigger damage. Mainly, landscaping issues offer with the slope or grade of the land and whether or not or not drainage issues are of a problem.

What do you get out of it? Great home inspectors will create up a report and give you an oral summary of what was discovered. The home inspector might show you specific matters of specific curiosity or problem, or you might simply get a summary of items noticed and noted in the report. The home inspector should not be producing choices for you on the home, but might, if certified, make specific expert recommendations, or recommend that you get a more severe matters inspected by a particularly-educated support individual.

Inspectors should be supplying you a standing look at of you home’s vital components ? not a laundry checklist of what is incorrect with the location. There are a lot of little issues that might be ‘wrong’ as in needing small interest or monitoring, but are not essential to the general security or marketability of the home. The worst element a home inspector can do is flip out to be emotional about the home being inspected. Great home inspectors are like great doctors or mechanics. They inform you what they discover, and about how essential or not a deficiency might be, but they should not be alarmist unless the scenario is possibly harmful or deadly (for instance, reside wires uncovered within reach of children or a critically deteriorated chimney which might collapse). Or else, the inspector should be detached and business-like in presenting his or her findings.

The seller has the emotional investment of living in a home and generally is quite sensitive about it. The purchaser is placing an emotional investment into the home because they like the location and can image on their own experiencing it. That’s where emotional biases arrive into play and sober reasoning can get the a much better of you by producing you not see feasible issues or excuse them absent because you really, really want this home. This is exactly why home inspectors have entered the scene in buy to get rid of the feelings and offer sober commentary. House inspectors do not get worried with the price of homes, and certainly do not decide for you on whether or not or not to buy or not (or sell). What they reveal about a home might impact the negotiations, but the home inspector should not be worried in them directly. For instance, based on the dimension of a home, a almost-dead furnace can price $5000 to $ten,000 to substitute, or new roofing of extremely tired shingles can price from $3000 to $30,000 ? a not insignificant impact on the home’s worth all through a transaction.

The Home Inspector

When you believe about it, it is a bit odd. A person hires a stranger to snoop about an additional stranger’s house for a few hrs and report back again. It is seems instead like someone using a burglar to situation a house for a robbery. The major distinction is that the proprietor of the house is a willing participant, as well, and that each and every thing is truly really legal and more than board. The motive of the purchaser is, of course, to make certain that he or she does not get ‘robbed’ with a damaged-down furnace that the seller say is great, for instance. This occurred to me in the days before house inspection was a typical element of the actual estate transaction. Although the assistance has been about because the 1970s, it has only truly flip out to be an integral element of house-purchasing because the mid to late 1990s.

My partner and I ended up with a furnace that was rapidly condemned by a technician and a great big bill for a new 1. It was mid-November and we could not precisely get along with out 1. What did we know about furnaces? We didn’t know how long 1 lasted or how to tell if it was in fantastic type or not. That was a dozen many years ago. We know much better now about furnaces ? completely absolutely nothing like obtaining burned to make you more wary next time.

Home inspectors are, like me, regular people who are interested in homes, their creating, their methods, and fairly much something else about them. They are usually generalists with knowledge of 1000′s of bits of information about fairly much something and each and every thing in the house. Some, have additional specialties in several trades, or will provide additional solutions at additional expenses for issues this kind of as Radon inspections. Numerous, like me, are trained and licensed via colleges or corporations this kind of as Carson-Dunlop Consulting Engineers in Toronto.

We are also interested in the people who reside there and the people who are searching to transfer in. Like you, we have spouses, kids, mom and father, pets, and other relatives with whom we share our living spaces. What we all have in typical is that we all want a great, obvious, secure location to reside with ? hopefully ? no unpleasant surprises. We want to help you comprehend what you have before you purchase or market, so you can make educated options.

No house is perfect. That is not to say something is wrong with it, but believe of a house as an natural entity. It sits on a foundation. It stands on its framework. It breathes and has circulatory methods. It requirements to keep at a comfy and even temperature. And, most of all, it requirements to be used treatment of. Like your personal body, or even your automobile, if you do not think about treatment of it, it will start to age prematurely and drop apart.

But what are house inspectors and why do you need 1?

Believe of a house inspector searching more than your house like the mechanic you have to look at your automobile. Homes need to be used treatment of and looked subsequent. However, like cars, occasionally we do not think about as much treatment of them as we ought to. Some issues are not fixed, whilst other issues are by no means even noticed or checked more than the many years and drop into disrepair. Home inspectors act as the detached third-party that advises on the situation and standing of the house with out the emotional investment. Fantastic house inspectors give the directly facts, will stage out issues to watch or fix, and will stage out the positives of your house as nicely.

Just as the name suggests, house inspectors inspect houses, but they also usually inspect garages, patios, decks, driveways, and the lay of the land. Some will inspect other structures this kind of as sheds, barns, gazebos, pools and pool homes, but these are previous the standards for most inspectors. Numerous will adhere to the standards and practices of the Canadian Association of Home and Inspectors (CAHPI or CAHI) or the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) ? whether or not or not they are actual members in the association.

Home inspection is the quickest-expanding trade within the actual estate industry in North America with about two-thirds to three-quarters of all houses undergoing an inspection. Home inspectors have flip out to be an integral element of the house transaction process. While most house inspectors are known as in as soon as a purchaser is ready to purchase a house, some are known as in by sellers before they want to market, or by property owners who are searching at major renovations or upgrades to their house.

What do they do?

In any situation, the inspection process is basically the precise same. Subsequent initial introductions and a discussion of what’s to be carried out, exactly where to go, exactly where not to go (the baby’s space), and other standards, the inspector will get down to the ‘dirty’ perform. The inspector will give the house and house a thorough going-more than ? usually beginning outside, then relocating indoors from space to space making observations and notes on a checklist. It is typical for inspectors to go into rooms two or three times searching at different issues each and every time. Other people will go to particular rooms only as soon as, executing all the checks they need then and there. Every inspector is different and capabilities in a different way.

Security is the more than-riding issue of the house inspector ? each for the inspector and the customer. Some house inspectors will open up electrical panels to look at wiring, other people will not, but all ought to inspect the panel(s), the wiring, distribution system, grounding, load, and other obvious bits and items.

Most inspectors will look within furnaces and other heating devices if the panels arrive off easily. Other people will use resources to get rid of panels, but many will draw the line there. Numerous inspectors will stroll on the roof when circumstances allow to inspect the roof, the materials and workmanship, and issues this kind of as vents, chimney(s), and gutters. Some roofs are very steep, in bad type, or are built with fragile tiles. Most inspectors will not stroll on the roof in these scenarios, but will each look from the edge via a ladder, look from an adjacent building, or use binoculars whilst on the ground.

Plumbing is an additional major system that house inspectors will invest a fantastic provide of time examining. They will look at what the pipes are produced of, whether or not it is electrically grounded or not, how the h2o seems, flows, and even smells, how scorching the h2o will get, as nicely as run each and every tap and toilet to ensure that they are all working nicely and not leaking. Home inspectors will also be searching for other leaks ? previous and existing, proof of h2o hurt, and they will look at drainage methods and sump pumps.

The building is an additional essential stage of the inspection. Inspectors will look at how the house is keeping by itself up ? literally, and how it is, or has been settling in and weathering via the many years. Inspectors will look for wall and floor cracks because of to settling and attempt to figure out the age and severity of the crack. Home inspectors will also look at the brickwork, windows, doorways, joists, rafters, pad, and other components for warping, fire or h2o hurt, bad creating, tampering or harmful remodelling, and other tell-tale signs of how the house is develop and used treatment of.

Home inspectors will frequently crawl about in crawlspaces, peer into or enter attics, look in closets and chimneys, about windows and doorways, beneath carpets, and each and every other location in the house exactly where they see or suspect proof of something may be amiss ? or may be particularly fantastic.

Common items not looked at are more cosmetic in nature. Paint is not a major issue unless of course of course it provides proof to other problems like mold, weathering, and so on. Carpeting is not usually commented on unless of course of course is moldy or on leading of electrical wiring. Landscaping will be looked at with regards to effect on the house. Trees and shrubs are frequently planted as well close to a house or develop up in opposition to them more than time and may trigger hurt. Mainly, landscaping problems provide with the slope or grade of the land and whether or not drainage problems are of a issue.

What do you get out of it? Fantastic house inspectors will create up a report and give you an oral summary of what was found. The house inspector may show you particular issues of specific curiosity or issue, or you may simply get a summary of items noticed and noted in the report. The house inspector ought to not be making options for you on the house, but may, if certified, make particular professional ideas, or recommend that you get more severe issues inspected by a especially-trained assistance person.

Inspectors ought to be supplying you a standing examine of you home’s essential components ? not a laundry checklist of what’s wrong with the location. There are a great deal of little issues that may be ‘wrong’ as in needing small attention or monitoring, but are not crucial to the general security or marketability of the house. The worst thing a house inspector can do is flip out to be emotional about the house becoming inspected. Fantastic house inspectors are like fantastic doctors or mechanics. They tell you what they discover, and about how crucial or not a deficiency may be, but they ought to not be alarmist unless of course of course the situation is possibly harmful or deadly (for instance, reside wires uncovered within attain of kids or a seriously deteriorated chimney which may collapse). Or else, the inspector ought to be detached and company-like in presenting his or her findings.

The seller has the emotional investment of living in a house and usually is really delicate about it. The purchaser is putting an emotional investment into the house simply because they like the location and can picture on their personal experiencing it. That is exactly where emotional biases arrive into play and sober reasoning can get the better of you by making you not see possible problems or excuse them absent simply because you truly, truly want this house. This is precisely why house inspectors have entered the scene in purchase to get rid of the feelings and offer sober commentary. Home inspectors do not get involved with the cost of houses, and definitely do not decide for you on whether or not to purchase or not (or market). What they reveal about a house may affect the negotiations, but the house inspector ought to not be involved in them directly. For instance, based on the dimension of a house, a nearly-dead furnace can cost $5000 to $10,000 to substitute, or new roofing of very tired shingles can cost from $3000 to $30,000 ? a not insignificant effect on the home’s truly worth throughout a transaction.

Remember the aged Calgon commercial-”Consider me away Calgon!” There is only 1 thing that can consider you away quicker than a Calgon bath, and that’s a scented candle. Whether or not you want a breath of clean spring air, or you want to transport your self to a South Sea paradise minus the trouble of airport safety, crowded, delayed flights and lost baggage, grab a scented candle, and journey wherever your imagination prospects. Smell is a potent perception, and you can use it to alter your mood inside seconds with the flicker of a candle. In reality, why not keep a supply of scented candles in the bathroom when you do not have time to luxuriate in the bathtub. Envelope your self in fragrance while you shower, dry and blow-dry.

Close your eyes and believe of every time: winter season, spring, summer time and drop every evoke special “scentual” memories. If it is the dead of winter season and you’ve already endured through 73 days of snow cover, light a piña colada candle or a seaside candle and pop in your favorite Beach Boys CD. Inhale the scents of summer time and forget about the cold for a few divine moments. Choose a fragile floral candle or perhaps a rain forest scent to remind you that April showers are correct around the corner. If it is 102° F in the shade, there is nothing like a pine-scented candle to deliver a fast shiver up your back. Longing for drop? Light a pumpkin candle to evoke the Harvest Moon and the bounty of autumn. What ever the occasion you would like to recreate, it is only a candle away. That is the power of the perception of scent.

Vacations are incomplete with out candles. If you believe back to your favorite holiday gatherings, your mind will probably wander to your favorite scents. Think about your favorite Xmas tree, and you are bound to remember the crisp scent of pine or cedar. The conventional holiday time from Thanksgiving to the New Year provides a organic cornucopia of fragrance. From pumpkin pie to peppermint ice cream to vanilla, the scents of the holiday time are all over the place.

Perhaps you use an synthetic tree instead of a clean-cut tree every year. Simulate the scent of a Frazier fir with candles. Synthetic trees are obtaining closer to their organic kissing cousins with every passing time, but they stay “flat” with out the accompanying scent. They just cannot bring the scent of Xmas into a home like the actual thing. Light a few pine or cedar candles, and voila-you may by no means miss the genuine article.

Feel free to light several complementary scents at once. The seasons and the holidays are full of naturally happening complementary fragrance. Each time contains a wealth of pleasing scent. The holiday time probably provides the most scent. Recreate the memories of Xmas past with gingerbread, vanilla, cinnamon, eggnog, clove, nutmeg, pine, peppermint candles. The scents do not compete, because they occur naturally, and you’ve smelled them from infancy. If you can believe of a memory, you can discover a candle to recreate the mood.

Look around your home. You have probably produced a space or two around a theme. Perhaps you’ve produced an indoor sunroom. Carry the scents of the outside into your sunroom to add authenticity. Perhaps you’ve built a space around a color. Add lavender-scented candles to that lavender space, rose-scented candles to a pink space, new-mown grass-scented and rain forest candles to a green space, vanilla or gardenia to a white space, and seaside to a blue space.

Don’t forget the kitchen. Not only will you want to add scent, but you may want to eliminate odors as nicely. If you’ve produced the perfect dinner for guests, the final thing you want is the scent of garlic, onion, or fish wafting through your home when they arrive. If the odor is overpowering, flip on the kitchen fan, spray a little odor neutralizer in the air, and light citrus-scented candles to replace cooking odors with the clear scent of fruit.

Cheaper than a trip to paradise, faster than you can even say “banana bread,” you can light a candle. If your mind can picture it, you can produce it with scented candles for mere pennies!

The purpose of a home ventilation system is to maintain a healthy living environment by supplying fresh air to your home while at the same time removing stale and polluted air. Home ventilation also helps to maintain proper humidity levels of 30 to 50 percent.

The air in your home is used many times over, often with fresh air entering only when we open doors or windows. As we strive to build homes more and more energy efficient, we create an environment prone to indoor air quality problems, thereby, reducing the homes ability to breathe and natural air changes do not occur.

The reason for the buildup of indoor pollution in today’s homes is a direct result of our efforts to conserve energy. With insufficient home ventilation, pollutants can build up and become very concentrated. These pollutants come from many sources and some, such as mold, are more problematic when combined with high humidity levels, which is another problem associated with inadequate home ventilation.

When humidity is too high, mold, mildew and rot can become serious problems. A mold outbreak can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to your home and in some cases can make a home uninhabitable.

Another problem with high humidity is dust mites. Every home has dust mites and they thrive in humid conditions. This is a concern for people who suffer from dust mite allergies.

Low humidity, on the other hand, can cause nose and throat irritation, dry skin, wood can shrink and crack and hardwood flooring can shrink and become noisy when walked on. Static electricity is a symptom of low humidity.

Home ventilation is one of the most important things you can manage, in order to maintain a healthy environment for you and your loved ones.

Heat Recovery Ventilators, Air Exchangers, Kitchen and Bathroom Exhaust Fans, Attic Ventilation Fans, Dryer Vents and attic and crawl space vents are all important components of proper home ventilation.

Pet Dander, Pollen, Lead, Dust Mites, Mold Spores, Tobacco Smoke, Household Chemicals, Pesticides, Cleaning Supplies, Paints and Solvents are only some of the common pollutants that can build up without adequate home ventilation.

Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide and Soot from fuel burning appliances and heating systems can also become a problem without proper home ventilation.

Proper home ventilation can help reduce allergy and asthma symptoms and help ease other respiratory ailments that burden millions of people.

I recently visited friends who served me a dinner of grilled salmon and baked potatoes, done to perfection in their chiminea. The sun was setting and it was cooling down but overall a wonderful summer evening. We wanted to converse and eventually, eat our meal outdoors. The bonus: the chiminea offered us warmth and the smoke kept some of the mosquitoes at bay (some still got us). I must say, as well as being a great evening, that was one of the most delicious pieces of salmon I’ve ever eaten.

Chimineas date back to 17th century Mexico, where they were used as ovens to bake bread, were for cooking and also a source of heat. The chiminea was usually placed near a window or in the center of the hut to allow smoke to escape. They were made of clay since it was the most readily available material in the area. Today cast iron, copper and cast aluminum are the materials of choice for most chimineas although you can still purchase ones made of clay.

What to consider when choosing a chiminea

Chimineas really are for outdoor use only. If you need a fireplace for indoors this is not a good choice. So where to start? Chimineas are tall and narrow and really make sense if you don’t have a large space but want an area for a fire. Don’t go too small on the fire area though, or you will be chopping your wood into bite-sized chimenea pieces to fit the opening. If don’t need portability you can go heavier and larger. You may also want to choose a model that has a grate that can be added or removed for cooking.

Some of the more popular patio and deck chimineas are made of cast iron. Choose from round, leaf, and designer cast iron chimineas designed for year round use. These cast iron fireplaces are designed to be sturdy and provide long lasting heat retention. Deck, patio and outdoor chimineas store easily and should be covered with a chiminea cover during the off season for protection. Copper and cast aluminum are also popular choices with the latter being the heaviest, most ornate and needing the least maintenance. See: http://www.newsletterjournal.com

Another consideration is the type of wood you burn. Best choice is pinon wood or other hardwoods. Pinon has the added advantage of helping to repel mosquitoes. Mesquite is also another option. Definitely stay away from pressure treated woods or anything that has been chemically treated ? especially if you are planning to cook on the fire. Once you are ready to use your chiminea, start out with a small fire and build from there. And even if you don’t live in the more fire prone regions of the country it is always a good idea to have some water or a fire extinguisher nearby, especially if you are in a small backyard.

Outdoor chiminea fireplaces are great addition for the pool area, garden, deck, or patio where you will be kept warm outside to enjoy the immense pleasures of a fire as well as cooking outdoors with friends or family.
