I’ve never worked for a boss I did not like or respect. Sure, some had been much better than other people, but I never considered quitting my career simply because of a poor boss. Sadly, numerous workers are not so fortunate.

If your boss is a total butthead, someone you’ll never get along with, admire or respect no matter how hard you try, there are a few issues you can do.

Wait. Is your boss shut to retirement or promotion–or even much better–termination? If so, try to bide your time and wait till that pleased event happens.

Bite your tongue. Keeping anger and frustration bottled up within is not wholesome, but neither is complaining about your boss at work. So if your family members can tolerate it, vent at home rather. It’ll make you really feel much better even if it does nothing to assist your scenario. It may be tempting to complain about your boss at work, especially if coworkers are talking about the same issues. But resist that temptation! If your boss finds out that you are complaining about him, he’ll have a reputable reason to take suitable action in opposition to you and make your life under him worse than it already is.

For instance, if he’s a micromanager, give him continuous updates and particulars on what you are performing (even if you think it’s a waste of your time and he ought to just believe in you to do your career). Efficient communication is extremely important, and it functions both methods. If your boss is unclear in telling you what he desires, inquire questions till you know exactly what is expected. During efficiency evaluations or one-on-one discussions, inquire him what you can do to meet his expectations.

Go over your boss’s head. This is rarely a great concept. But if you have attempted every thing else, and you really feel that your boss is generating serious mistakes that affect the company (and not just you), think about talking to his superior. If you take this route, be prepared with specific examples and proof, not just accusations. And understand that this tactic may backfire on you (especially if your boss’s boss is also a butthead).

Leave. This may be a difficult choice for you, especially if you like your work, benefits, coworkers and company. But you must also think about your sanity (and that of your family members to whom you vent). Carefully weigh the alternatives and if you determine that leaving is your greatest choice, do it right. Don’t yell “I stop!” during a heated argument. Strategy forward–update your resume, start consulting with your network, appear for another career. Your goal, if feasible, is to have another career lined up before you inform your boss you are leaving. And even then, resist the temptation to inform him off. Attempt to depart on the greatest terms feasible and do not burn your bridges. You never know when and exactly where that butthead boss may show up in your long term!
