Self Marketing 101 – Why Students Should Tell Lies

Everyone lies, and storytellers are some of the greatest liars about. But here is the issue: People like storytellers. They detest liars. The which means is comparable but various. In the South, storytellers sit on porch swings and drink ice tea. Liars stare down the barrel of shotguns.

I should know. I’m from the South and we shoot liars all the time. Of course, I’m lying. But I cannot assist it. Following all, I am a &quotSouthern&quot storyteller. I emphasis the adjective because I believe Southerners tell stories for reasons that are not usually apparent to our buddies in other parts of the United States. Our stories are more than entertainment. They educate lessons and these lessons are usually stuffed with wisdom that is inspirational.

For example, everyone knows the old saying &quotyou cannot educate an old dog new tricks.&quot I wager what individuals don’t know is that it arrives from the South. Of course, individuals in the Midwest will swear it is theirs. They’re lying. If they just occur to be telling the reality, then it doesn’t really matter because I will still say it is ours. In reality, we have been utilizing that saying for so long that strong personal philosophies have grown up about it. One guy says, &quotYou cannot educate an old dog new tricks, but you can educate old tricks to a new dog.&quot Then the guy sitting subsequent to him will say, &quotWhat canines will not discover, cats will.&quot These two men could sit on the porch and twist and flip 1 easy concept a million various ways-and I’m not lying.

This tale illustrates a more complicated concept that I want to make about the relationship in between storytelling and college students. In his guide &quotAll Marketers are Liars,&quot Seth Godin statements that advertising is about telling a great tale. Successful marketers tell us stories that match our perception systems and these stories directly affect our behavior. I comprehend Godin’s factors. What I fall short to comprehend is why college students don’t appropriate this behavior when it arrives to advertising on their own to on their own. It seems to me to be the most essential skill college students can create and exploit. But they don’t. College students are malcontent and maladjusted because storytelling has been outsourced to actors, singers, reporters, politicians, and marketers who are not usually heavily invested in telling them the reality. These individuals affect the stories college students tell on their own. This affect is why college students have stopped telling on their own stories to celebrate their differences. It is more appropriate to be like others. College students have stopped telling on their own stories for inspiration. Religious leaders and speak show hosts fill this gap. Storytelling is in the hands of the people in New York and Hollywood and they are not giving it back again with out a battle.

My advice to college students is easy. Prepare to battle. Southerners are usually up for a brawl. Following all, we did lose the war. But we discovered some lessons that no other area in the United States has actually had to discover. We discovered to adore ourselves. We discovered that storytelling is transformative. It uplifts. It heals. And if we lack affect, prosperity, elegance, and fame (qualities all college students covet), we usually own a more potent device. That device is storytelling and stories are what it manifests. Now, that’s the reality.
