The Challenges College Students Face on Secular Campuses

What is occurring on the campuses of secular universities throughout The united states? 1000′s of Christian students are dropping their faith and non-Christian students are becoming entrenched in their unbelief. Why is this occurring? Have they discovered that God, in actuality, does not really exist, that we reside in a careening universe with no divine Pilot at the wheel? Or does some thing else clarify this pattern?

The Intellectual Problem
Christian students on a secular campus encounter a fantastic intellectual challenge. The underlying principle of the university classroom is naturalism. School students find it all over the location, not just in biology, physics, anthropology, and geology, but also in chemistry, astronomy, psychology, political science, and so on. University faculties defend this pervasive naturalism in two ways: by banishment and by confrontation.

The Banishment Strategy
The banishment strategy is, of program, the much more venerable and the much less aggressive of the two. A science professor will state at the beginning of the semester: “Science entails the gathering and evaluation of information as the basis for forming hypotheses regarding the nature of actuality. It should, as a result, exclude any reference to the supernatural as out of bounds for scientific inquiry. Whether or not or not God exists, or angels, fairies, pixies, goblins, or the Boogie Guy is irrelevant to scientific investigation. Preserve to your religious or superstitious beliefs if you want to, but do not carry them up in this classroom. It is off the topic we do not have time for theological debates correct here.”

School students instantly get the concept that believing in God is anti-intellectual or at minimum one’s faith should be compartmentalized and not permitted to spill much more than the transom into the science classroom. Be a believer elsewhere if you want, students uncover, but arrive to science as a naturalist.

We Christians can’t take this banishment. We have created Christ our life (Col. three:four Phil. 1:21), and His Lordship extends to every and each and component of our lives. Certainly the 1 who produced the universe at the beginning (Col. 1:sixteen) and who even now sustains it moment by moment (Col. 1:17), has a correct to enter a space where his handiwork is being examined and admired.

It is His macro- and micro-planning, organizing, systematizing, and engineering, following all, that makes all science feasible. If we did not reside in an orderly universe our scientists would be reduced to historians and statisticians who document the millions of haphazard occasions as they transpire, but can make no deductions, inductions, or educated guesses about what would happen subsequent.

The Confrontation Strategy
A much more present and much more and much more popular strategy in the university classroom is to take the creationist bull by the horns and attack belief in the God of the Bible by any feasible indicates. This is the strategy of journals this kind of as Development/Evolution and The Cynical Inquirer. Professors declare the mechanistic/materialistic explanation for origins removes all require for God. Naturalists in the classroom are not over utilizing illogical arguments to win much more than their students.

For instance, they might use advert hominem arguments, associating belief in a Creator/Sustainer with witch-hunting, skinheads, and the Ku Klux Klan. Or they might use reductio advert absurdum arguments, this kind of as asking how several dinosaur partners went onto the ark, or how Noah could be particular he had every male and feminine mosquitoes. Or they might knock down straw males, this kind of as claiming victory if they can prove even the slightest modifications occur, or limiting creationism only to these who believe the world began in 4004 BC. Or they might commit non sequiturs, this kind of as claiming that because finches differ from one an additional, as a result, complex, mega-celled organisms created from single-celled life types, and these from non-life.

Of program, we too should be cautious how we make our case, taking treatment to steer clear of the exact same mistakes. But it is tough to wrestle with an opponent who refuses to battle by the guidelines.

We require Christian campus ministries simply because somebody should stand up in our university community and affirm the biblical see of origins and of the floor and objective for our existence.

The Bible obviously affirms these truths about our universe: (1) it had a beginning, all three individuals of the Godhead being concerned in its development (Gen. 1:1-three John 1:1-three Col. 1:fifteen-17) ( two) at the beginning, it arrived into existence out of nothing (Heb. eleven:three) and (three) its interdependent systems are all by God’s design and beneath His ongoing manage (Job 38-39 Ps. 19:1-6).

The Bible has a title for these whose dizzying intellects lead them to atheism. Psalm 14:1 calls them fools, referring not to the Stupids, but to self-deceived rebels in opposition to God. Just to make certain that we do not neglect, the exact same psalm recurs as the fifty-third. Paul describes these who have provided up their info of God as these whose foolish hearts have turn out to be darkened and who then turn out to be arrogant (Rom. 1:21-23). In all three of these passages, the intellectual rejection of God’s existence potential customers to a ethical rejection of God’s will (Ps. 14.three 53:three Rom. 1:24-32).

The Results of this Naturalism
This prevailing naturalism (or anti-supernaturalism) has at minimum three a lot-reaching results. Initial, our school students are taught that fact is relative. With out God as the everlasting, immutable floor of all actuality, fact turns into little much more than one’s subjective perception of it. These who maintain to absolute fact are ridiculed and harassed.

In a present speech entitled, “The Difficulty with Turning into Open-Minded,” Bruce Lockerbie stated: “In present day university atmosphere, absolutes dissolve into absolutism and are scoffed at with contempt. Ironically, nevertheless, present day students have been taught that some absolutes survive. Correct here is a sample of these campus absolutes, of which present day students and several of their lecturers are totally particular! (1) I believe as a result, I am [René Descartes]. (two) God is dead. God stays dead. And we have killed him [Friedrich Nietzsche]. (three) There are truths but no fact [Albert Camus]. (four) We have neither behind us, nor prior to us in a luminous realm of values, any indicates of justification or excuse. We are left on your personal, with out excuse [Jean-Paul Sartre]. (5) Existence is difficult, then you die. [bumper sticker].”

Modern American campuses are comparable to the historical Athenians, whom Luke describes in Capabilities 17:21: [They] invested their time performing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas. Simply because Christianity, with its beliefs and methods, is almost 2000 many years old, they believe it should be jettisoned by all who intellectually have arrive of age. 2nd, the faith of our students is challenged in and out of the classroom.

As the Apostle Peter anticipated, people sometimes ask students the reason for the wish that they have (1 Pet. three:fifteen), and our students should be prepared with a great answer. But Peter also stated in two Pet. three:three-four: “in the final days scoffers will arrive, scoffing and following their personal evil needs. They will say, Exactly where is this coming he promised? Really because our fathers died, each and thing goes on as it has because the beginning of development.” This is naturalism’s doctrine of uniformitarianism, contradicted at development by itself and a myriad of occasions because by the catastrophes and the disasters of nature. Our students should uncover the flaws in naturalism’s design so that their faith can stand company and not erode absent by wave following wave of faculty banishment or confrontational ridicule and the peer stress from other students.

3rd, our students are being taught that not only fact is relative, but morality is relative. Isaiah cries: “Woe to these who telephone evil great and great evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. Woe to these who are smart in their personal eyes and clever in their personal sight” (Isa. 5:20-21).

The Deifying of Tolerance
On campus, tolerance is praise as the best virtue, and intolerance as the vice. Senator Dan Coats of Indiana spoke recently on the virtue of tolerance. Quoting G. K. Chesterton: “When the world subsequent tries persecution critically, it will most most likely be beneath some new title,” Coats stated that persecution’s new title is tolerance by itself. Our students are taught not to be judgmental, which has the impact of encouraging them to have no ethical judgment at all. Coats recalls that the poet Ogden Nash confessed: “Sometimes with leading secret pride I sigh / To believe how tolerant am I / Then surprise which is really mine / Tolerance, or a rubber spine.”

This deifying of tolerance demonizes any who stand up for ethical absolutes and who have the courage to say in adore, for instance, to a homosexual, “What you are performing is wrong and is dangerous every to your self and to culture.” A colleague of mine informed me of a Christian college student we’ll telephone Ann, whose function at a local AIDS screening clinic introduced her into every day get in touch with with training homosexuals. She created up her thoughts to be salt and light in that location, and as a final result, struck up a friendship with a lesbian we’ll telephone Florence.”

After Ann was confident that Florence could sensation her friendship, she asked her why she grew to become a lesbian. “When I was growing up,” Florence stated, “I was usually wanting to perform rough, climb trees, go hunting, and other ‘guy’ issues like that. I required to be like my father a lot.”

“That is humorous,” Ann stated. “I was a tomboy too. I used to follow my dad around attempting to do whatever he did.”

“You did? And you are straight, correct?”

“Yeah.”

“I thought only lesbians had my experience.”

Ann left it at that for awhile. Then, a few weeks later on on, when Florence was sharing about her initial sexual experience (a lesbian one) and describing how uncommon it all felt, Ann stated, “That makes sensation. Maybe it’s like when I initial went on a diet plan and had to drink Diet plan Coke. No one who initial drinks that issues likes it, but following awhile they get used to it, and then it does not trouble them any longer. Maybe gay intercourse is like that. At initial you do not like it, but if you maintain performing it, you get used to it.”

Florence did not say anything for a moment. “Yeah, perhaps you are correct,” she finally replied. These two conversations Ann had with Florence introduced the lesbian a lengthy way. Not yet all the way to Jesus Christ, but light many years nearer. If Ann had just confirmed “tolerance” and ignored the ethical distinction in in between her and Florence, nothing would have altered.

Coats says that the irony is how the virtue of tolerance has been stolen from us Christians. It is time for us to reclaim it. We serve a God who makes his sun shine on the evil and the great and sends his rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Into an intolerant world Jesus launched tolerance as some thing groundbreaking. He was branded a drunkard and a glutton and the buddy of tax-collectors and sinners. Our friends in academia act as if mulitculturalism had been some thing recently invented. But Paul introduced it as the way of the Christ: There is neither Jew nor Greek, barbarian or Scythian, slave or totally free, male and feminine (Gal. three:28 Col. three:eleven).

No one has much more experience in multiculturalism than the church, which for 2000 many years has been taking the gospel to every and each and nation and tradition as it fulfills the Great Commission.

We Christians believe in tolerance. But our tolerance is not shallow like that of the educational community. In his speech Coats factors out that tolerance has two extremes: permissiveness and persecution. Our non-Christian colleagues on campus stand on the permissiveness extreme–standing for nothing and falling for each and thing. They believe that Christians are at the other extreme, equating us with racists, ethnocentrists, and homophobes.

But we are not there. We maintain Coats’ middle floor: persuasion (two Cor. 5:eleven, 14-21). It is not that we try to energy people into conforming to our (really, the Lord’s) requirements. To the opposite, we have discovered from our Grasp that outward conformity has little value if the heart is not in it. Instead, we try to alter people’s thinking, confident that with altered hearts, their steps will follow.
