Its the Headline, Stupid! – Writing Powerful Headlines

“It’s the headline, stupid,” is the sign that hangs over my computer display. It reminds me that to write effective content articles, press releases, sales letters–whatever I want people to read–I need a potent, grabber headline or title.

You are competing with a lot of others to get the attention of possible readers and customers, and you have only a few seconds to grab them. By using the suggestions and methods here, you can stand out from the crowd with dynamite headlines.

Use alliteration. That indicates using words that start with the exact same sound, this kind of as “Peter’s Perfect Plan.”

Consider a familiar stating and turn it around. Consider a cliche and put a new spin on it. What does the early bird get (instead of the worm) in your headline?

Be timely. Reference some thing in the news, a vacation, or other occurring that is on readers’ minds.

Use figures. “7 Issues You Require to Know Prior to You (Go to the Hospital, Purchase a Home, Use Your Credit Card, Get Married, whatever)” will get attention, because anybody contemplating the motion will want the info.

Use “scorching” words. Some words are potent, and can be used effectively in headlines and titles. “Free,” “Secrets and techniques,” “Insider,” “New,” etc. are grabbers.

Be controversial. Make a statement that goes against the prevailing wisdom.

Use a query. Get readers’ interest by asking a query in your headline, then fulfill their curiosity by answering it inside the text.

Keep it short. Long Headlines can work, but short ones are much better. Do not make readers work that tough.

Pique their curiosity. For a press release on mystery shopping, I used the headline, “Nearby Woman Spies on Businesses for Fun and Profit.” Why does she spy on companies? What is she looking for? Who hires her to do this?

Promise a benefit. Everyone desires to know WIIFM.(What’s In It For Me?) Tell them correct up front with a headline that guarantees a fantastic benefit, then be sure you provide the benefit.

Follow these suggestions and you’ll write much better press releases, content articles, and sales letters. They’ll be read by much more people, and that indicates much more success for you!
