Valentines Day ? Where Did THAT Come From?
Just as quickly as the stores place away their Xmas merchandise, out arrives the Valentine’s Day items – even even though Valentine’s is still much more than 6 weeks away.
I don’t know why, but it always demands me by surprise to see Valentine’s Day merchandise so quickly following Xmas.
I’ve always wondered exactly where Valentine’s Day arrived from, and under these circumstances, a individual could be forgiven for thinking it was invented to create much more company when Xmas is more than.
But no, following a small research, I found that Valentine’s is not a holiday that was &quotinvented&quot by greeting card companies to market much more greeting cards or by candy companies to market much more candy or by florists to market much more roses.
Valentine’s Day truly started much more than one,500 many years in the previous.
In accordance to legend, Valentine was a priest who defied the orders of the Roman emperor Claudius and continued to carry out marriages. It appears that Claudius acknowledged no youthful males required to join his army simply because they did not want to depart their wives and sweethearts. When it was found that Valentine was still carrying out marriages in top secret, he was sentenced to demise. Valentine allegedly cured the jailer’s daughter of blindness, and on the evening before his execution, sent a note to her signed &quotfrom your Valentine.&quot He reportedly died on Feb. 14, 269 A.D.
In 496 A.D., February 14 was named by Pope Gelasius to honor St. Valentine.
The initial Valentines are credited to Charles, Duke of Orleans, who was imprisoned in the Tower of London during the 1400s exactly where he wrote romantic verses that he sent to his wife.
A lady named Esther Howland is credited with sending the initial Valentine in the United States.
The United States Postal Solutions is credited with advancing the reputation of sending Valentines when the penny postcard was introduced in the mid 1800s. Prior to that, sending mail was as nicely costly for the typical individual, simply because at the time, the individual who Obtained the letter paid the postage and not the individual who SENT the letter.
Personally, I am thankful it’s not that way these days. Can you imagine paying the postage to receive your Valentines?
In days gone by, Valentines had been hand-painted cards embellished with lace and feathers and sequins.
I don’t know about anyone else, but if I had been heading to hand paint a Valentine and improve it with lace and feathers and sequins, I would not go to all that function for just anyone.
These days, nevertheless, Valentine’s cards are mass created in thousands of styles and sizes – large ones and little ones serious ones and foolish ones affordable ones and costly ones.
The variety of Valentine’s cards is overpowering and, as much as I am concerned, rather needless. I mean, how many Valentine’s cards does one individual require to purchase? Partner? Mother and father? Siblings? Second and third cousins? The teacher you had in fifth grade? The lady who cuts your hair? The grocery store clerk who tallied up your last purchase? The man who stopped his car so you could make it via the crosswalk with out becoming operate more than?
And what about the Valentine’s merchandise? The candy, the posters, the teddy bears sporting a red heart that says ‘Be Mine,’ socks with small red hearts all more than them, heart-formed rings, necklaces and earrings, and the checklist goes on and on.
I surprise what the actual St. Valentine would think of the cards and the candy and the jewellery and whatever else?
Then again, perhaps the actual St. Valentine would be delighted by this turn of occasions.
Following all, it’s been much more than one,700 many years because he died, but every Feb. 14, individuals are still celebrating Valentine’s Day.
And that locations supplying Valentines into a whole new point of view, does not it.
